A call to ” Arms ” !!

A call to ” Arms ” !!

The day started so well on the 30 th july , a dawn patrol out of mylor and plenty of good quality bass landed on surface lures, big bass hitting a Patchinko has to be regarded as the ultimate start to a day  . Later in the day I had my traditional bass Fishermans afternoon kip and decided to go to the skatepark for a session in the bowl , at 7 pm I pushed it too hard , the back wheels skidded out and I slammed side on into the face of...

Changing your whole marine electrons system over is quite a big thing  and even more so when you depend on the kit day in and day out . I remember when I switched from a PC to a Mac it was a big jump into the unknown . Like wise switching from my previous system to  Garmin Panoptix does take a little time to adjust too . Old dogs and new tricks springs to mind ! Two days ago I headed out too sea with the newly installed Panoptix Down...

The moon pulled up an acre of Bass

The moon pulled up an acre of Bass

Happy weather , Happy fish . Thats always been the way with Bass but regardless I can say hand on heart that I have never seen Bass in such huge concentrations. Add to that I have also never seen so many 38 – 40 cm fish out there mixing it up with the big girls. In the last 2 weeks I have witnessed a huge shoals in locations  where I normally mark dozens. Likewise the Eddystone was rammed with fish and yesterday I spent 4 hours...

Magic numbers

Magic numbers

13 is the Magic number if you fish for Bass in the Uk. Once that sea temperature hits 13 degrees everything just seems to come to life .  11 Degrees may mark the beginning , but 13 is far more exciting . We have just clipped the magic 13 in the West Country . Thats it , its game on from now until Christmas !! There has been a lot of negativity about Bass stocks and the state of the fishery over the last year . I have become friends...

Skating on thin ice

Back in the 70’s I was a keen skateboarder or at least I was until around 1979/ 1980  . I was a lonely skater , an only child with no mates to skate with other than one lad who I would see for a week every summer ”Miles Merckel ”  he lived close to the famous Southsea Skatepark . We have remained friends to this day , although he does now live in Australia . I remember how daunting the big bowl was there . I think I...

Last night after at least 3 minutes of pre planning I did an presentation to Mounts Bay Angling association on Saltwater Fly fishing . I guess I had about 20 people there of all ages . Hopefully inspiring the next generation rather than boring them too tears !? Its funny because as I stood there jabbering on about this quirky form of fishing it really struck me  just how odd it is ! Its only when you stand in front of a group of...

EXTINCTION

EXTINCTION

I don’t bother with the local rags but when I saw the wealthy fisherman /  businessman Chris Bean looking glum faced on the front cover of last weeks West Briton I just had to grab a copy and find out what the article tiled”  EXTINCTION ” was all about . It was a classic example of the rhetoric that has gotten Bass stocks into the state they are now. Hook and line guys take a fraction of the numbers that the inshore...

Nightmare or Dream come true?

Zen2 is a great example of a low impact high yield fishing business but a ban on catch and release Bass fishing until July may destroy it ? These are exciting and worrying times in the history of European Bass , stocks are low , something is finally being done to address this problem . I think we are all aware by now that finally after decades of neglect and spineless management policies throughout Europe our beloved Bass are now at...

Fishing blogs tend to be all about how awesome everything is , well not today  , today was so bad fishing wise that I just did the honest thing and told my clients I was wasting their money and my time , we agreed on an half day tariff , had lunch together at Castaways and I dropped the guys off , bid them farewell , hoped they were serious about a return trip in October and went home to my own family . Its a fascinating experience to...
