It quite funny really how we can all get sucked into all the hype and commercially driven excitement in  magazines or ” Blogs ”. I can be just as easily led up the garden path as anyone else and take the odd look at a blog to see which  latest ” must have ”  lure is being heralded . I can easily forget that I have a load of great unfashionable lures jammed into the archtrave of the door to my fishing warehouse,...

These days I get quite a few Father and Son bookings. I really enjoy watching the dynamic . Its often feels an honour to be part of something so precious . In most case these guys don’t get to fish together too often , its a special time.  One question people ask me on an almost daily basis is ‘`does my son fish ‘ I explain that I was guilty a year or 2 ago of being a somewhat over enthusiastic parent with the...

Still a Fly Guy – Still a Fly Guide

This is the gritty time of the year , spiritually , financially but mostly spriritually . Days are spent just hoping for a year as great as the last and the diary to be full . My 200 mile long office , all those sunsets and sunrises spent drifting on Zen2 are replaced with an unhealthy amount of time spent at home watching last years pennies slip away again . Watching all the cyber worms-wiggle on my screen . Trying to stay motivated...

The dark side of lure fishing

The dark side of lure fishing

I think the technical phrase for the fishing right now is ” Its going off dude !! ” Bass are hammering herring fry in shallows and deep water . Yesterday was epic for Topwater lure fishing  and today was pretty close . We had 17 on the lure and fly . It was a long day but in true Matt Hayes style it all came together for a photo finish with the trophy fish to end the day. John was over the moon when this strong chunky 60...

Cornish  Bass Massacre has begun – THIS HAS TO STOP !! One Mevagissy boat apparently netted 5600 Pounds (2500 Kilos)  of our  Bass last week . At an average of 3 lb per fish that’s 1866 Dead Bass . These fish that will achieve up to  £ 16 per Kilo in prime condition as line caught are being sold at £ 2 a Kilo  as the market floods with net damaged Bass,. These reports depress me , disgust and make me question why I would...

Some days the fishing can be quite forgettable. Some days I get to fish with unforgettable  people. Was it the  curve down out of solid spring tides toward  neaps. that has slowed the fishing over the last 48  hours ?  I suspect that may be the case . We only landed 3 bass today, non worthy of a photo. We lost a very nice bass at one stage during the day. Is it the fish we lose that keep us fishing rather than the ones we land ? I had...

I may have been fishing almost every day for the last month . I may have a pile of emails , messages, paperwork to catch up on but regardless I went fishing today  , Big tides , lightish winds and an opportunity to fish awesome new ground made the decision easy   . I fished with Mark , a client / friend who has done 4 days over the last 2 weeks and Malcolm . This wasnt a guide day this was a chance to hit some new marks and finally...

A Bass from the edge of my world

Today was a very special day for me, not from the point of view of huge  Bass landed or hooked . This was a day I had been waiting  for .I have been studying the charts and walking the headlands of the far West and this location has been in my mind constantly, almost taunting me , I have lost count of the number of aborted missions where the wind and tides have conspired to keep me away . Weeks turn into Months rapidly! Today after so...

This short story pretty much epitomises why I take guys fishing every year and have loved doing so for 7 years . I once spent a day fishing with a client. We had arranged to spend the day Saltwater fly fishing for Bass in Cornwall. We were fishing a gutless neap tide, The sun was high in the sky . The wind had dropped down to zero knots. I had no idea that the customer had never fly fished before. I cant think of a tougher situation...

Mike Bryant has become a great friend over the last 3 years .I have a story to share regarding one of our exploits together while filming our forthcoming film so let me begin . Mike is a filmmaker from North Cornwall, he is a great bass fisherman who has won the much revered St Columb Bass festival once or twice over the years. I was introduced to Mike by a client, we met up and before the first pint of beer was empty we had...
