Bass Fishing Cornwall October blog

Ive worked my nads  off this summer ! Its been amazing, exhausting, exciting, funny, sad, easy , hard, humorous, serious and a whole lot more.  Now I have a van that needs a service. Ive spent a grand on the traior  repairs and tyres  this week and the Suzuki DF 150 is just about ready for its 400 hour service. The ironic twist of the knife is that come October the mother load of Bass start to arrive in West Cornwall and the punters vanish! (Time for some winter deals ! Im not missing the best part of the year ) 48 hours ago Khem and I fly fished on the Lizard and landed 9 Bass to the  gurgler  fly on floating lines in 8 foot of water. This drreamy sunset was a wonderful end to what has been a dream run of bookings and weather. Khems a jammy git ! Its becoming a regular theme when we fish together.  Hes a very competent all round angler but that aside he still has a lucky streak . Take Sunday for example. I tried a new drift for Blue Sharks, perhaps brave with a client , but I did have Jammy Khem not a regular punter ! After 5 hours without a bite I decided the best idea would be to go for Bass and try and make it up to the guy. The lifting of the chum bag very much signals the end of the session or the loss of hope . I lifted the bag Khem and had a solid run from what turned out to be a 60 lb shark. These fish tussle really well on the major craft jiggiing rods , saying that the fish was ready to land with 6 minuites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aruddko_5hY I just this week finally took the plunge and invested in a gorgeous 2.9 ghz I Mac. I have had that in my mind all summer, its my way of rewarding myself for all those 3 am alarm calls an 12 -13 hour days with 8 of them bobbing about on zen2 . 400 Fiiish Minnows – 6 Spools of 20 lb seguar – 10 spools of 20 lb Braid- 3  broken lure rods – 2 fly lines and God knows how many saltwater flies later I had the time  today to compile all the video clips and test out the I Mac’s video editing capabilites. Its been a joy to use the Mac and even more of a joy to throw the clips together. So many memories , there are parts of the film that make me feel quite emotional. There is only...

Zen2 Summer update

Zen2 Summer update

Its the halfway point in the season for me , or at least the main season , time for a report on what’s been going on. After the trauma of 2012 both financially and climatically 2013 is a dream come true.  The fishing has been excellent . This joyous Summer has made everything make sense . June started slowly , the water temperatures stubbornly remained low. Any fish we landed were all falling to winter tactics, Paddle tails in rips fished deep and slow were the go to method for me for week on end, then this wonderful weather arrived and the water temperatures shot up. The sea came to life and the summer bass games began in full earnest . I love fly and Topwater lure fishing and at last the Bass were pouncing on my Z Claw 500 g again. Its also a great deal cheaper , surface lures are rarely lost ! Here are a few photos of fish from the summer , Check out those Cooches Bream , they are awesome fish ! Khem Struck Silver straight away, Pressure off me ! Zen2 Shark Fishing Falmouth bay I always love to get my teeth into learning new methods and skills. Im not alone, its the nature of the sport . I had planned to start doing some shark fishing in 2013  but it was a chance encounter with fellow UKBASS member Jeff Smith that kick-started operation Shark ahead of schedule . I bumped into Jeff on Mylor slipway in early June , despite the low water temperatures they had landed 8 shark to 100 LB plus . He hit the nail on the head in a sentence I can still hear his words now ” Austen you’ve got to get into this ! We’ve dragged our boat 300 miles to fish here !!” Well that was it . Obsessive researching began there and then . The amazing thing about our shark fishing down in Cornwall is that it all happens so close to shore. I can see my Bass marks quite clearly while drifting for Sharks  . We can realistically target  Sharks and Bass on the same charter !! I can go one mile out from the manacles reef and find 250 foot of water !  I don’t know how many hours or days went into researching all aspects of sharking but it soon became apparent that the way that 99 % of people shark fish doesn’t suit me or my approach to fishing  if you spend any time on Youtube you will see 50 lb Blue Sharks being landed on 80 lb Class rods. Were targeting fish that...

Zen2 Bass Fishing – Cracking the code

ZEN 2 @ Padstow – Plymouth – St Ives – Falmouth – Penzance Today its hard for me to contain my excitement. I small sticker and a certificate arrived with the mornings post.   This is something I have been working towards for 18 months. Its been really tough going at times and the expense involved has been staggering. Sometimes you go so far down the road you just have to keep going. You have invested so much that you can not turn back . Well I’ve done it !! Zen2 is the first boat of its kind to achieve MCA  CAT 4 Status. I have also spent a great deal of time and money upgrading my charter  skippers ticket to take my Bass fishing clients to the places that fill me with awe . We have 200 miles or so of coastline in Cornwall . My previous operational area was tiny in comparison . MY OFFICE HAS JUST INCREASED IN SIZE BY 200 % I Can now take my punters to all those hard-core locations that I have been fishing alone or with my mates 2012 was a tough year for me Bass fishing in Cornwall. You name it we had it, screwed up water temperatures, Wind , rain, rain, rain. I remember sitting on my boat with clients in Falmouth Bay and the water was the colour of milky coffee. (We did actually catch a Bass that day .)I took a call from a mate of mine who had landed 30 Bass fishing the gin clear waters on the North coast. It was very depressing to say the least. Most charter boats are stuck to one Port ,so if the wind takes a turn for the worst they are stuck. Zen2 can now launch from multiple ports . I know plenty of places with good fishing where we can tuck in close to shore and stay safe. SE winds are a nightmare on the South coast and have become my worst enemy in Falmouth Bay, so now when it blows from the South East we will be launching at StIves or Padstow.   This is a massive step for me. So where do you want to go Bass fishing in Cornwall in 2013 ? We now have 200 Miles of coastline and endless possibilities !  http://www.bassfishingcornwall.com/    ...
