Dropshotting in the salt

Dropshotting in the salt (So far ) The last month has been very quiet on Zen2 , she has sat there gathering dust or should I say leaves. The bookings really did tail off towards the middle of October , the few days booked were lost to rough seas anyway. I jumped for joy when 2 bookings coincided with perfectly calm seas and at last we were on a mission ! James has been on a few trips with me this year. That  horrendous cold spring...

What a great year it has been , so many great days  aboard Zen2 . So many great fish !  Long days they are. I would say the average day works out at around 13 hours start to finish.  Most days the alarm goes off around 4 am . I have to take every booking that comes my way . The winter is a quiet time for bookings. Were loaded with Bass but Joe public just won’t make his way down the A 30. So Winter is the time to look back and...

Ive worked my nads  off this summer ! Its been amazing, exhausting, exciting, funny, sad, easy , hard, humorous, serious and a whole lot more.  Now I have a van that needs a service. Ive spent a grand on the traior  repairs and tyres  this week and the Suzuki DF 150 is just about ready for its 400 hour service. The ironic twist of the knife is that come October the mother load of Bass start to arrive in West Cornwall and the punters...

The dark side of lure fishing

The dark side of lure fishing

I think the technical phrase for the fishing right now is ” Its going off dude !! ” Bass are hammering herring fry in shallows and deep water . Yesterday was epic for Topwater lure fishing  and today was pretty close . We had 17 on the lure and fly . It was a long day but in true Matt Hayes style it all came together for a photo finish with the trophy fish to end the day. John was over the moon when this strong chunky 60...

Zen2 Summer update

Its the halfway point in the season for me , or at least the main season , time for a report on what’s been going on. After the trauma of 2012 both financially and climatically 2013 is a dream come true.  The fishing has been excellent . This joyous Summer has made everything make sense . June started slowly , the water temperatures stubbornly remained low. Any fish we landed were all falling to winter tactics, Paddle tails in...

I think its official  My brain is now fully fried, I have done so many days on the water  over the last 2 months . I can no longer tell you who I fished with the day before or what day it is., I remember the fish but the names and faces are becoming blurred. I have to grab every charter I can . I cant afford to turn work away . So before I forget the names again I fished with Simon and Scott today, two very good natured local chaps,...

I just figured I would bash out a blog  before I collapse with exhaustion or the kids come home from the beach  . Friday Shark fishing out of Falmouth You just would not believe the...

Bass Fishing Padstow and Porthleven

I have been saltwater Fly fishing on the Camel Estuary for several years now. Its a unique place and I am still haunted and bothered by the memory  a very large Bass I hooked and lost on the fly there on my first ever visit. This fish was hooked and swam straight towards the boat. If I had the landing net to hand I could have scooped it up, but alas this fish just came along side the boat turned and the fly fell simply out of her...
